How the border crossing works

Puerto Iguazú (Argentina), Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) and Ciudad del Este (Paraguay) are a few kilometers apart, separated by the Iguazú and Paraná rivers. Crossing is a normal part of any Iguazú trip: the Brazilian side of the falls, the Bird Park, Itaipu and shopping in Paraguay are all across a bridge.

What ID to carry

  • Mercosur citizens: a valid national ID is enough to cross into Brazil and Paraguay.
  • Everyone else: a valid passport. Some nationalities also need a Brazilian or Paraguayan visa.
  • Visas: since April 2025 Brazil requires an electronic visa (e-Visa) for citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia. This can change, so confirm it on the official Brazilian government site or with a consulate before you travel; the visa is applied for online in advance.
  • Minors: children traveling on their own documents need whatever authorization and papers each country asks for. Check with your consulate or message us.

The two bridges

  • Tancredo Neves Bridge (Argentina ⇄ Brazil): about 6 km from downtown Puerto Iguazú. This is the crossing for Foz, the Brazilian falls and Foz airport.
  • Friendship Bridge (Brazil ⇄ Paraguay): links Foz do Iguaçu with Ciudad del Este. To go from Puerto Iguazú to Paraguay you cross both bridges, so two border checks.

How long it takes

The driving part is short, but the wait at immigration varies a lot: 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the day and season. Weekends, holidays and school vacations tend to be busier. Leaving early is the best way to save time.

Money and phone

Brazil uses the real and Paraguay the guaraní, though many shops in Ciudad del Este accept US dollars. If you use your phone, check roaming: it's easy to lose data when crossing.
